hive heating review

Brrr! Things have been getting a bit chilly round these parts recently, not helped by the fact that we have single glazed Crittal windows! Beautiful original Art Deco windows might look the part but damn, they don’t half give us a heating issue. The flat heats up quickly but also loses heat quickly, resulting in a constant game between me and my husband of ‘go onnnnn….. you go and turn it up…. Pleeeeeeease!’ (and back and forth arguing over who needs to leave the cosy cocoon of blankets we have created ensues).

But it’s a new year and with that comes a whole heap of ‘home resolutions’, one of which being to find a system that would allow us to… well put it bluntly, be more lazy and warm! I don’t know about you but endless trips to the thermostat are such a bore (and ours is only about 3 feet from the door)! So when Hive by British Gas got in touch to see if I’d be interested in having the system installed in my home and doing a hive heating review there was a resounding YES! I’d seen adverts for the various systems that allow you to control heating from your phone or tablet and always thought it would be a really cool and useful gadget to have in our home, it would give us way more control over the heating, plus I knew that would be a definite plus point when we do come to eventually sell the flat.

I thought that you might need to be with British Gas in order to have it installed but it actually works with your pre-existing heating system from any supplier.

The installation was super simple. Before arranging for the engineer to come out to me at a suitable time the consultant on the phone made sure that I had a spare Ethernet port and a plug near the wireless router. Check!

A few days later a lovely chappy knocked on my door and started installing the Hive system. It literally took an hour, and was super simple. I asked questions like ‘will it still work if my wireless cuts out?’ (yes), can I do it from outside my flat (yes) and ‘what happens if my boiler breaks, please tell me it’s not going to break… does it look like it’s about to break?!’ Handily enough they do a full boiler check when installing and ours was as fit as a fiddle. Phew!

I was shown that not only could I just control the thermostat from my iPad or phone but that I could also set up a heating schedule, which I’d never done before because all of the little knobs on the boiler were just too confusing and only allowed one set schedule which had to be the same every day. Hive’s handy because we can set a different schedule for every day of the week, perfect for when I’m working from home some days and others we are both out.

The thermostat looks really sleek which is a nice addition, and the Hive system itself is barely noticeable.

It’s already made a big difference to our day-to-day lives and general cosiness! If we go out for the evening we can switch it on in the car on the way home and know that we’ll be arriving home to toasty warmth. On an unrelated note it’s also helped with the condensation and mould issues as the new heating schedule means that condensation is dried out first thing in the morning rather than being left to sit and drip. No more sad, wet windows!

With just a one off fee of £199 for the system and installation, it’s a pretty good deal to me. I have to say though, the best bit about Hive is being able to wake up in the morning and turn on the heating from under the duvet and save the shivery dash to the hallway. That, my friends, is pure luxury.
