alternative christmas decorations

Hey! Like me, you might not be someone who's super into christmas. Of course I love the getting together of family and sharing happiness but I can find the decor side of things a little bit too 'nice'. So this year, when I was invited to join Kirstie Allsop on her Handmade Christmas show on channel 4 I decided to bring you all something of a punk take on the traditional xmas. I've also recreated that tree at home with a bunch more decorations - on the show we had to hand make everything so tinsel and gold baubles were out of the picture).

Hopefully you'll find this tree serves as a little bit of inspiration for your own Alternative Xmas movement!

The concept behind my tree was traditional xmas gifts for girls and boys given a punk / pop twist. Each vintage barbie was handpainted with a different pattern and the toy cars were given a neon pink makeover and turned into baubles.

I chose this amazing 7ft black, cashmere tipped christmas tree from B&Q, which is even more cool because it comes pre lit so you don't need to faff around with lights either. I love the black colour, I was going to buy a tree and then spray paint it gold (like I did in the show) or black, but this was the perfect look! What a find.

I finished off the look with golden beads and thick gold tinsel (also from B&Q) because with a tree this kitsch you kind of need tinsel! Oh and just to go all out I also bought a little LED reindeer. SO BLING! Here's the finished look.

Having a tree like this is so much fun as it's a really big talking point for your guests. Have you gone for anything unexpected this year when it comes to your christmas decorations? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
