IDEAL HOME SHOW REVIEW (VIDEO + PICS)
by Sarah Akwisombe
I've never been to the Ideal Home Show. Just never got round to it! I've always heard great things so I was really excited to be invited down on behalf of Ekornes, makers of the Stressless recliner chairs. I'd not heard of them before but my god, their chairs are amazing! Ok so here's how my day panned out...
10am: ARRIVE AND MEET STRESSLESS UK TEAM
We're being held outside the front doors of Earls Court as it isn't open yet. Anyone would think we were an angry mob of football hooligans, except this time is was lovely groups of homey loving folks eager to check out new interior goodies. Once I'm inside I'm blown away. The IHS is vast! I head over to the Ekornes stand to meet the team who invited me down. I get to sit in every chair they have on display, my fave being the chrome and orange leather recliner. Super dope. We get told all about how the chairs are made and fit to the curvature of your spine. We sit in the cinema room which has a f*cking awesome BOSE surround sound tv that literally sounds like we're in the cinema. I wish. One day.
11am: I HAVE A WANDER AROUND THE MAIN FLOOR
The main floor is where all the big exhibitors stands are, from Smeg to Bose to Wallpaper direct and loads more. They have garden, interiors and home improvements on the ground floor. I take a wander around on my own and snap some pics of my fave furniture pieces, as well as taking a few notes for things to come back later for!
11.30am: MY FRIEND NAOMI ARRIVES
Naomi is blown away (as was I when I arrived!) and we get to going around each stand, in a systematic fashion so as not to miss anything. We take this seriously. On my wander around alone I spotted a load of crazy space ship looking massage chairs, so of course I want Naomi to have a go.
12.00pm: WE HEAD UPSTAIRS
So upstairs is where all the food stands and shopping areas are. It's crazy in the food area. As we get to the top of the escalator we are confronted with the hugest sweet stand I have ever seen! As we wander around we get samples of fudge (they do red bull flavour?!), cheese, wine, spirits, sushi... you name it. I purchase some Baileys fudge, pina colada curd (this will be SUPER in a cake), ginger and whiskey cheddar, salad dressing and a bottle of really lovely low alcohol rose. We then stop for sushi for lunch, and as it's so packed we're sitting on the floor for lunch!
12.45pm: HEAD INTO THE SHOPPING SECTION
This is like a big market full of bits and bobs in homewares. I find Fleur Elise, who specialise in preserving flowers for displays. I'm in love!
As I turn around Naomi is chatting to a man from Battersea Dogs Home. He tells us all about the great work they are doing so we set up a monthly donation and pose with a Dalmation to celebrate.
1.15pm: AHHHMYYGERD THERE'S A WOMANS SECTION FILLED WITH FUN BEAUTY STUFF!
I drag Naomi around and use her as my guinea pig. I get her sparkly lipstick, I get her to try on some clip in hair extensions, some funky nail art and furry head muff things, even though it's the hottest day of the year so far. I think Naomi looks like a Russian ice queen bond villain. I look like a 60s pop singer. We buy them, obviously. There are massage chairs and electronic massage devices everywhere.
1.30pm: HOME APPLIANCES
We check out the home appliances section and it's like QVC live all up in your face! Kind of exciting! There are loads of juicers being demonstrated and free juice being handed out. Naturally, we get in on that action. Then we head back downstairs to pick up the pieces I want to buy and sit down for a well deserved champers. All this machine massaging and free sample eating is hard work. I buy a gilt frame from Ayers and Graces and some chrome spheres to make a display.
2.30pm: TIME TO SAY GOODBYE!
We head back to the Ekornes stand to chill out on the comfy chairs and say goodbye and thankyou to the Stressless team. We've had such an awesome day and I'd thoroughly recommend coming. It's worth doing half a day on your own if you really want to scout out the best offers and experience some of the show homes or demonstrations. Then bring a friend to gather up the free samples, eat some yummy food and generally just had a fun packed day!
Have you ever been to the Ideal Home Show or thinking about going? You can still get tickets as it's on till the 30th March!
